So many good things…
I am inclined to want to do everything. To add one more good practice to my day but just like a closet too full of clothes where you try to cram in one more cute sweater, a day can only hold so much. To thrive and flourish, the activities and tasks must be evaluated and curated. What is most important? where should I spend my precious time and attention?
I may find a really cute sweater but if it doesn’t fit in my closet I’ll need to pass or find an old sweater I can remove to make room. The metaphor tends to falls apart at some point because we are definitely limited as to how much time we have, not so much with clothes storage but you get the idea.
Still, my brain wants it all - the ideas are everywhere I turn. To read the books, listen to the podcasts, make the things, go the places, spend time with the people - all that I see in the instagram/facebook lives of my friends (and so many strangers…)! Which can leave me feeling overwhelmed and guilt ridden. The sad part is that an over busy life crowds out quiet moments of reflection, pondering and time with the divine.
The rush from here to there ends up taking me to places that don’t really matter. A life with a mish-mash of impulsive “spending” of my precious time - my one precious life.
Can you relate to this challenge? So let’s clean out the “closet” - take it all out and consider the things that matter most while letting go of the rest. Stand back and notice that a few priceless things deserve a place in our day. It will require daily purging and embracing. If we’re willing to do the work, in the end it will be a life well lived. A “closet” full of things we love.
How does it happen? I know what works for me and hundreds of my clients. Set aside ME (Mastery and Excellence) time - use the first and last minutes of your day to live more intentionally. The first and last things you do in your day make all the difference. Begin your day with planning and end with evaluation. Even 10 minutes is enough to make a change. Give it a try!
